The military operations in Swat and resulting humanitarian crisis are a test not only for the Pakistani government, but for Pakistani society as well.

A day with Swat IDPs it is really difficult to express your feelings in words but we are happy to be the part of this team & being involved in this work. On 7th June 2009, we went to a School in Abbotabad where almost 57 families were moved from Swat, Buner to F.G Girls high school, there are almost 67 Children & 45 women’s who lived with their families in school class room. IDPs of Swat deserved full support and needed to be treated with sympathy, love and kindness.

But much more must be done. Pakistan’s civil society needs to utilize the same level of sustained commitment it did with the earthquakes in Balochistan and Kashmir and the lawyers movement. Hundreds of thousands have made their way to relief camps, where the provisions are inadequate. The void must be filled Pakistani citizens — especially those who live comfortably in air conditioned homes with high ceilings and flat-panel televisions.

The LMKR Relief team visited Government Girls High School, Nawan Sher, Abbottabad Relief Camp and donated four Electric Water Coolers to the camp organizers. The camp hosts over 300 IDPs.

A team of four visited Yar Hussain Mera Camp in Swabi which is host to almost 1300 families. Over 100 family packs were given to the local administration for distribution to the IDPs.

Various members from the LMKR family have been dedicating countless hours to help support the Swat Relief Campaign. Various non-food items were packed for subsequent distribution across IDPs’ camps.

Essential items required on the campsites for the IDPs were purchased. These items mainly consisted of food, clothing, personal items and medicines. Shop keepers around the country have been very supportive of the Swat relief initiatives and demonstrated a great deal of compassion and concern.

Most of the items purchased will be packed by the end of this week and shipped over the weekend during camp visits.

The LMKR Relief teams visited various areas which are host to internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps as a result of the Swat operations. These visits were mainly scouting trips to assess areas and camps which need immediate assistance.

Our teams planned visits to Mardan (Sheikh Yasin Camp, Sheikh Shehzad Camp and Swabi Yar Hussain Mera Camp), Peshawar and Hasan Abdal. Teams also went over to relief camps in the vicinity of Islamabad.
